The T&TPS conducted an exercise last Saturday between the hours of 5:30 pm and 9:30 pm. The exercise was under the supervision of Inspector Nigel Birch and Ag Corporal Ian Stevenson and included members of the Northern Division Gang Unit together with a party of officers from the Northern Task Force.
Acting on intelligence and information received the officers intercepted one grey ad wagon vehicle Reg # PDT 9739 in the vicinity of the Couva flyover and the Solomon Hochoy Highway. A comprehensive search was conducted of the vehicle and the police found 50 brick-like packages each containing a dry plant-like material resembling marijuana with an approximate weight of 53.4 kilos. Following this find, the police arrested one Avinash Chadee, age 23, of 37 New Settlement, Dow Village and Chonin Cadiz age 49 of Jay Drive, Bonair Gardens. Cpl Stevenson is presently conducting further inquiries.
This is the same police team that last week arrested two persons who had two high-powered rifles and over three thousand rounds of ammunition hidden in a washing machine that was being transported in a vehicle. This incident took place in Port of Spain.
The heightened police activity is all consistent with the Commissioner’s drive to stymie the drug trade. When contacted at home on the drug bust Commissioner, Gary Griffith was in high praise of his officers and advised that the fight against all forms of crime including drugs and ammunition shall be relentless.
