Insider banditry at Mt Hope Hospital

An ongoing pharmaceutical racket at the Mt Hope Hospital is no longer a guarded secret. This insider banditry has been going on close to four years and has now become a festering sore spiking larger concern among certain members of the medical community.

Disturbingly, medical drugs and supplies for sick patients and the terminally ill are recklessly being stolen from inside the guarded compound and later sold to certain rogue pharmacies and some equally corrupt private hospitals across the country.
Reports are that this notorious scam has been chalking up a quantum of close to $2 million per year and rising since for some strange, inscrutable reason there has been no clampdown on the banditry and distribution of this trade where taxpayers’ money underwrite the huge bill ad nauseum.
Overtime, alarms about the ever-continuing criminal theft of life-saving drugs and a dizzying array of medical supplies have been raised to some high-ranking officials at the hospital, but they all, reportedly, have been turning a “blind eye” to what is a very shocking state of affairs at Mt. Hope.
It is widely known who are the persons stealing the drugs from the hospital but no reports of theft are ever sent to the police for investigation even after official reports have been made by the hospital staff and all the miscreants receive, at most, is a slap on the wrist.

Prescription drugs have been stolen for years

Prescription drugs have been stolen for years and it is not unusual to see cars filled with medical supplies leaving the compound.
One of the ways how the thefts carried is by hiding the drugs in the dumpsters with the help of maintenance workers who retrieve the drugs after the dumpsters have been removed.
One senior official complained that there are no real checks and balances and that the present Security service is incompetent and is only concerned about pleasing the Chief Executive Officer.
Another senior official requesting anonymity told Sunshine Today that there is a massive cover-up to this scandal being nationally exposed. And frequently you would hear upon enquiry “We are not receiving funds for the drugs.”
But the Ministry of Health and pertinent arms of the law need now to cast a searchlight on the searing scandal.
An investigating source has pointed out reports continue to be made to the Quality Risk Management Department at Mt. Hope but it is all in vain.
“But no reports are taken seriously, none at all,” he told Sunshine Today.
He continued:” Imagine if the security service catches someone stealing a bundle of drugs and boxes of painkillers, the report never reaches the St. Joseph Police Station “but stays inside.”
Sunshine Today learnt that a closer look should be taken about the auditing of the books at Mt. Hope Hospital.
What’s more, according to our investigating source at the hospital, “Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh should intervene since privileged workers are now running Mt. Hope.”
As we go to press, all attempts to contact CEO Dr Devlin Thomas proved futile but the pages of Sunshine Today are open to him to shed some light on medical banditry at Mt. Hope Hospital.
